SPELDHURST DERBY courses for horses |

|
The Speldhurst Derby and Fun Show was conceived both to raise money for Hospice in the Weald, and also to provide a local venue for riders. So many of the small family shows that we enjoyed in the past no longer exist, so we want to keep alive a valued tradition.
Our annual show takes place on a Sunday at the beginning of July. The main Derby courses consists of between 16 and 20 jumps including show jumps, fixed cross country jumps and natural obstacles. Those who have jumped clear do a jump-off against the clock.
From next year there will be a smaller Derby arena in which 1’ 6”, 2’ 0” and Horse and Hound competitions will be run concurrently. Other events include Working Hunter classes, Fancy Dress and Gymkhanas.

Many parents have used this event to take their children to their first competitive pony event and have been delighted to find how it has boosted their confidence. They can win Clear Round or My Four-Legged Friends rosettes over low but interesting courses, and the Gymkha lead-rein class includes Musical Sacks and Crossing the River and if necessary a race for those who have not yet been placed. This year we introduced the hilarious Sword and Rings race. In the lower Derby events no one is eliminated and the judges are fairly short-sighted when ponies do funny wiggles or bends in front of jumps. However the higher classes are genuinely challenging. We give rosettes to 10th place as well as outstandingly beautiful bronze trophies and the prize of dinner for two at the award-winning George and Dragon in Speldhurst..
