SPELDHURST DERBY

courses for horses

COURSES

The main Derby arena extends over roughly  5 acres with a mixture of show jumps and cross country jumps in a central ring and a cross country extension over the adjoining hillside.  It will be used for the 2’ 6”,  2’ 9” and possibly a 2’ 3” course

In 2008 we found that competitors waiting for the higher courses were held up by an over-long leading rein and novice class and eventually had to go home without competing because of the rain and the slippery ground.   To avoid this problem in 2009 we are introducing a second Derby arena spread over about 2 acres, and here the 1’ 6”, 2’ 0” and Horse and Hound competitions will be run concurrently.  In this way the whole show will be over more quickly and with luck we will be able to deal with bad weather more flexibly.

Jumps in the second Derby arena are currently under construction.  For these classes competitors may enter as many times as they want, so that they can gain confidence and improve. If they go clear they will receive a Clear Round or Four Legged Friends rosette and their time will be recorded and displayed.  The winners will receive a beautiful cup or trophy and rosettes will be awarded to 8th place.  Those who go clear in the main arena will not be eligible for a place in the two novice competitions.

MAIN DERBY ARENA

Roughly half the jumps are show jumps and are not shown on this website.  The cross country jumps are grouped according to size but some may be adapted for more than one class.
